What Is a Dental Implant?
A dental implant is a small post made from medical-grade titanium or titanium alloy that replaces the root of a missing tooth. Once it has bonded with your jawbone, we attach a crown, bridge or denture, so it looks and works much like a natural tooth.
Single Tooth and Full-Arch Implants in Brisbane
The right option depends on how many teeth you’re missing and whether you’d prefer fixed or removable teeth. Implants are fixed in the jawbone, help preserve the bone, and with proper care can last decades.
Single Tooth Implant
Replaces one missing tooth with one implant and a crown. The teeth either side aren't touched, unlike a traditional bridge.
Full-Arch Implants (Full Mouth)
A full set of upper or lower teeth fixed on several implants, as a stable alternative to dentures. Planned and placed here at our clinic.
Implant-Supported Bridge
Replaces several missing teeth in a row. Two or more implants hold a bridge, so you don't need an implant for every tooth.
Implant-Supported Dentures
A denture that clips onto two or more implants, so it stays secure when you eat and speak. It can be taken out for cleaning.
Not sure which option suits you? We’ll go through your options and costs at your consultation.
How Much Do Dental Implants Cost in Brisbane?
A single dental implant with its crown typically costs about $4,500 at Fortitude Valley Dentist. A personalised treatment plan and accurate quote are provided after your consultation.
The implant, the abutment that connects it to your new tooth, and your custom-made crown. Your quote will list any additional treatment you need.
Many extras policies with major dental cover contribute towards implant treatment, depending on your level of cover and annual limits. We process claims on the spot via HICAPS, and our team can check what your fund is likely to pay before you start.
The final price depends on the number of implants required, whether bone grafting or other procedures are needed, the type of restoration (crown, bridge or denture), and the overall complexity of your case. Some patients need extractions, bone grafting, gum treatment or temporary restorations first, to create a healthy foundation for the implant.
Yes. Interest-free* payment plans are available, and eligible patients may be able to use their superannuation for dental implant treatment. Our team explains all costs clearly before treatment begins, so there are no surprises.
*Payment plans are provided by third-party providers and are subject to their approval, terms and fees. Early release of superannuation is assessed and approved by the Australian Taxation Office, not by Fortitude Valley Dentist, and tax may apply to amounts released.

Dental Implants Compared With Bridges and Dentures
Leaving a gap can let the jawbone shrink and neighbouring teeth drift, which can change your bite and make chewing harder. Here’s how the three main ways to replace a tooth compare.
| Feature | Dental implants | Dental bridge | Dentures |
|---|---|---|---|
| Neighbouring teeth | Not affected | Adjacent teeth are filed down for crowns | Not affected |
| Replaces the root | Yes | No | No |
| Fixed or removable | Fixed in the jawbone | Fixed to neighbouring teeth | Removable, may shift |
| Jawbone | Helps maintain bone structure | Does not prevent bone loss | Does not prevent bone loss |
| Typical lifespan | Can last decades with proper care | May need replacement after 10 to 15 years | Need regular adjustments or replacement |

The right option depends on the number of missing teeth, the condition of your surrounding teeth, your jawbone, your budget and your long-term goals. A consultation will help determine the most suitable option for you.
Are Dental Implants Right for You?
Most adults with missing teeth can be candidates for dental implants. When it comes to dental implants for seniors, age on its own isn’t usually a barrier. Before treatment begins, we assess your suitability with a comprehensive examination, looking at your general health, medications, gum health and bone support. If needed, we may recommend gum treatment, bone grafting or an extraction first, or discuss whether implant-supported dentures or another option suits you better.
You may be a suitable candidate if you:
- Have healthy gums
- Have sufficient jawbone density
- Are in good general health
- Do not smoke heavily
- Keep up regular checkups and cleans
Your Dental Implant Treatment in Brisbane: What to Expect
From your first consultation to your final crown, implant treatment usually takes 3 to 6 months over 3 to 6 appointments.
Step 1: Consultation and Planning
We examine your teeth and gums, take X-rays, check your bite and jawbone, and talk through your options and costs. If you have previous dental X-rays, please bring them.
Step 2: Placing the Implant
The implant is placed in your jawbone under local anaesthetic. Most patients feel only pressure. If a tooth needs to come out first, we remove it and let the area heal before placing the implant. If you’re anxious, we offer nitrous oxide, and you can ask us about sleep dentistry.
Step 3: Healing
Over about three months, the implant bonds with your bone, a process called osseointegration. We work in stages so we can check the implant is completely stable before fitting your new tooth. A temporary crown may be fitted in the meantime.
Step 4: Fitting Your New Tooth
We take impressions and our laboratory makes your custom crown, bridge or denture, which we then fit securely to the implant.
Step 5: Aftercare
For the first few days, eat soft foods, avoid hard or crunchy foods near the implant, and keep the area clean with gentle brushing and rinsing. After that, care for your implant like a natural tooth: brush twice a day, clean between your teeth, and keep up your checkups.
Risks and Things to Consider
Dental implant treatment is surgery, and like any surgical procedure it carries risks. These can include swelling, bruising or discomfort after placement, infection, an implant that doesn’t bond with the bone, and, rarely, nerve or sinus complications. Smoking, diabetes and gum disease can increase some of these risks. Over the long term, implants need good cleaning and regular checkups to keep the gum and bone around them healthy.
We’ll explain the risks that apply to you at your consultation, so you can make an informed decision.
Any surgical or invasive procedure carries risks. Before proceeding, you should seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner.

Dental Implant Questions
Everything you need to know
Dental implants are designed to be long-term. With good oral hygiene and regular checkups, they can last 20 years or more. The crown on top may need replacing after 10 to 15 years due to normal wear.
Often, yes. If the bone has shrunk, a bone graft may be needed first. Your consultation will show whether this applies to you.
Yes. Implant-supported dentures attach to two or more implants, so they’re more stable than a standard denture. We’ll discuss whether this suits you.
Yes, but smoking can slow healing and affect success rates. Your dentist will discuss your individual risk factors.
Age on its own isn’t usually a barrier. Your dentist will assess your general health, gums and bone support to recommend the most suitable option.
If a tooth has been missing for a while, the jawbone in that area may have shrunk. In many cases a bone graft can rebuild the area before or during implant placement. If an implant isn’t suitable, we’ll talk you through other options, such as an implant-supported denture, a bridge or a denture.
